Introducing … Becky Hunt!

Hi everyone! My name is Becky Hunt and I am a Registered Veterinary Technician with a Veterinary Technician Specialty (VTS) in Nutrition. I graduated from Seneca College in 2016 and have mostly worked in general practice ever since. I have some experience with Emergency Medicine, but my passion is working directly with clients and their pets with regards to nutrition, especially with obesity prevention. In June of 2023 I passed my exam with the Academy of Veterinary Nutrition Technicians to obtain my VTS in Nutrition and am so excited to take these skills into OVC and work with other amazing specialists in the field.

What interests or motivates you most?

My interests when it comes to animal nutrition would definitely be weight loss. I have always enjoyed troubleshooting and working with clients on tips and tricks with helping their pets achieve an ideal body weight, as it always comes with its challenges

Where did you work before joining the OVC Pet Nutrition Team?

Prior to working with the OVC Pet Nutrition Team I was working in general practice at a Small Animal clinic in Caledon. This practice was also a surgical referral service, so I have a wide range of experience from Wellness and Preventative care, surgery/anesthesia, and of course running the clinic’s Nutrition Program. I also had some experience in emergency medicine while I was living in Manitoba.

When did you become interested in nutrition?

My interest initially stemmed from noticing a gap in the animal hospital I was working at. We recommended and sold food, but I realized there was more that we could do to support our patients and clients nutritionally. So, with that, it spiraled from there. Weight Loss is what started to excite me the most when it comes to nutrition at the beginning. Weight loss is still a passion of mine, but it definitely built up significantly from there!

Tell us about your pets, past and present.

Growing up, my family has always had cats. And then when I was teenager, we finally went to go get our first dog and ended up coming home with 2 somehow! All those animals have since passed away except for our little senior citizen Roxy (little black dog). I now have one dog and one cat. Nova is an almost 8 yr old Bully Kutta. She came to me unexpectedly when she was surrendered to the hospital I was working at. The team was struggling to find her a foster home and somehow, she ended up coming home with me. She came with many challenges as most rescues do, but she is now a very happy, lazy bed hog. And little miss Annie was a foster fail from one of my many litter of foster kittens while I was living in Manitoba. She is 3 years old now and still a wild child, but follows me around everywhere for attention… or food.
