Hi everyone! My name is Savanna, I am currently in my first semester of the Master of Biomedical Sciences (MBS) program in Clinical Studies at the Ontario Veterinary College under the supervision of Dr. Adronie Verbrugghe.
How would you describe yourself?
I would describe myself as a goal-oriented and motivated individual that works hard at achieving my goals. I am a huge animal lover that is passionate about companion animal nutrition and veterinary medicine alike.
What interests or motivates you most?
Animals of course! Starting from a very young age I had a passion for caring for animals. I knew I wanted to follow a career path that allowed me to do just that. More recently I found a love for companion animal nutrition, and I am enthusiastic about making positive contributions to research in the field.
What program were you in before?
Prior to this program I completed my Bachelor of Science Honours in Animal Biology here at the University of Guelph.
When did you become interested in nutrition?
Although I have always been interested in veterinary medicine, it wasn’t until I began my undergrad that my interest in nutrition peaked. More specifically when I began working at Pet Valu. Through speaking with hundreds of customers over the years I discovered an abundance of controversy and myths about pet nutrition. As a result, I began diving into research to educate customers and even my colleagues with the most factual and up to date information possible. Outside of work, it became my hobby to share and discuss pet nutrition research on online forums to further educate myself and other pet parents. Additionally, I took several nutrition courses during my undergrad focusing on human, farm animal, companion animal, wildlife, and even fish nutrition, all of which further solidified my interest in the topic.
What made you choose this graduate program, and what are you looking forward to most about it?
I was particularly drawn to this program because it combines my interest in both veterinary medicine and pet nutrition. My research project is based on the carbohydrate content of commercial feline diets and potential associations to obesity and diabetes. While working as a veterinary assistant I noticed a trend in pet obesity and diabetes especially in felines. Many pet owners are under the impression that kibble, and more specifically carbohydrates are the main contributing factor to these diseases. Hence, I was drawn to this program as I would love to contribute to research on this topic to further educate pet owners and improve the health of kitties.
Tell us about your pets, past and present.
I currently have 4 pets. A 4-year-old dog named Taurus who is a Vizsla and Redbone coonhound mix, a dwarf rabbit named Luna, a crested gecko named chai and a bearded dragon named gryphon after the UofG mascot. Fun fact: In the past I was a breeder of Australian Gouldian Finches and Conure parrots.

What is your research project?
For my research project I will be working with PhD student Hannah Godfrey on the topic of carbohydrate content and types in commercial feline diets and the potential associations with obesity and diabetes.
